Have you been longing to escape your everyday routine, and go on a weekend getaway? Whether your goal is to get lost and immerse yourself in beautiful Florida wildlife, forget about the daily stresses of your job while relaxing at the spa with your loved one, or just have some fun in the sun splashing around in the ocean, there is a South Florida destination that is perfect for you this summer. In fact, we’ve put together a list of the10 best weekend getaway destinations in South Florida, so check out a few of our favorite beaches, resorts, and water sport areas:
1. Hobe Sound Beach
Our first destination is a little-known secret beach destination found in Martin County, Florida, located at the end of a barrier island, midway between West Palm Beach and Port St. Lucie. Our destination spot, Hobe Sound Beach was labeled part of the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, which was established back in 1969. Since it is not well known, it’s perfect for getting away from tourist beaches – especially for nature lovers, as this hidden gem is 5-miles of unspoiled shore full of untouched native vegetation and endangered wildlife that you won’t be able to see anywhere else. You have to see this place, because visiting a secret beach as gorgeous as this should be on everyone’s bucket list!
2. Little Palm Island Resort and Spa
On an island called Little Torch Key in the Florida Keys, there is a quaint resort where guests are welcomed with a tall glass of tropical rum punch. When choosing our favorite South Florida getaways, we weren’t surprised to find Little Palm Island Resort and Spa has often been listed as one of the top Florida resorts with its “South Pacific” feel, thatched-roof bungalows, crushed-seashell paths, and hundreds of coconut palms throughout the resort. Not to mention, this South Florida destination is the ultimate romantic getaway, as it lacks most forms of modern distractions like televisions, phones, radios, and even clocks.
3. Key Largo, Florida
If you are the adventurous type, Key Largo in the Florida Keys has some of the best water sports and activities for a summer getaway. Whether you’re looking to learn how to scuba dive or are an experienced windsurfer, there is something for everyone to do here. We highly recommend taking a trip to Key Largo to anyone looking to learn a water sport. Pro tip: many Floridians claim to have learned to surf, dive, and everything in between here.
4. The Palms Hotel and Spa South Beach
This South Beach resort features a family-friendly environment with all of the conveniences of being close to Miami. So if relaxing on the beach is your number one priority this summer, you’ll fit right in here! Most South Beach Palms visitors can be found lounging beachside on hammocks, playing golf at one of two 18-hole courses, or treating themselves to a spa day at the Aveda Spa and Salon. There are also plenty of water activities located nearby that South Beach visitors can sign up for, such as sailing, scuba diving, and snorkeling.
5. Biscayne National Park
South of Miami on the Biscayne Bay is a national park known for having some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling areas in the United States. In fact, sixteen endangered species are found in the Biscayne National Park, making it a great place to travel for wildlife lovers. The barrier reefs that you’ll get to see when diving are truly amazing, and they actually make up part of the Florida Reef!
